DESCRIPTION:

Perennial, prostrate, a stemless rosette of up to 8 over;apping leaves, c. 15 cm in diameter. Leaves sessile on root, large with wavy edges, 1-4* 2-8 cm, deeply veined, velvety with white hair on upper surface, pale grey-green, sometimes purple-red, edges smooth, rolled under. Inflorescence thistle-like head, 4*4 cm, purple to white, in tight 4-6-flowered cluster in center of plant. Open seed capsule remains on plant as a straw-colored, fringed 'basket'. Flowering from February to May.
