Reviving Fujairah’s Arid Lands: Soil and Water Strategies for Greening Efforts

Fujairah’s arid terrain, with its rocky mountains and low rainfall, makes agriculture and vegetation growth challenging. However, strategic soil and water management can help transform these harsh landscapes into greener, more productive areas.

The region’s soils are often poor in nutrients, highly alkaline, and have low water retention. High alkalinity, with pH levels sometimes above 9, limits the availability of essential nutrients for plants. Rapid rainfall runoff can also cause flash floods without replenishing soil moisture, further complicating vegetation growth.

Studies of key areas, including Al Taween, Al Taiba Farms, and Flag Park, show that while the soil is mostly alkaline and porous, it contains valuable nutrients like iron and potassium. With the right amendments and management, these soils can support plant life.

Key strategies for greening arid lands include:

  • Afforestation and native species planting: Using hardy plants like Moringa peregrina that are well-suited to arid climates.

  • Efficient water management: Capturing and redirecting runoff water into the soil, implementing drip irrigation, and increasing soil moisture.

  • Soil improvement: Applying amendments to reduce alkalinity and improve nutrient availability for plants.

  • Site-specific planning: Tailoring strategies based on local soil and climate conditions, such as temperature, rainfall patterns, and wind.

These approaches help increase vegetation cover, improve ecosystem resilience, and create sustainable agricultural opportunities. By integrating soil analysis, climate data, and vegetation planning, it is possible to revive arid lands, support food security, and preserve biodiversity in Fujairah.

Continued research and collaboration between local communities, researchers, and authorities are essential to scale these strategies across the UAE and ensure long-term sustainability. Reference
